If you’re not sure University is for you, that’s okay! Something that isn’t discussed enough is the possibility of taking part in career training (CT) after secondary school instead of the typical route to university. But hold on, you might be asking yourself what actually is CT… well it’s exactly what it says on the tin.  It’s schooling that prepares you for a job in a specific field. It can also include professional training or a trade certificate course.

Some of the different types of CT include…

  • Apprenticeships
  • Traineeships
  • E-learning courses
  • Advanced learner loan courses

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is being in full-time paid employment or gaining a qualification at the same time. The good thing about an apprenticeship is you can put your skills into practice which will help you progress into a career path within the industry that you choose to go into.

Traineeships

A Traineeship is a skills development programme that includes a work placement. It can last from 6 weeks up to 1 year, though most traineeships last for less than 6 months. They are designed to help young people aged 16 to 19 who don’t yet have the appropriate skills or experience and unlock their great potential to prepare them for their future careers helping them to become ‘work ready’.

E-learning Courses

Online courses are the modern version of courses: you can create and share learning content in an organized way that allows users to progress in their understanding of a certain topic. It consists of a curriculum or study plan, in organised in units.

Advanced Learner Loan Courses

An Advanced Learner Loan helps with the costs of further education courses. Learners that are aged 19 and over and studying an approved learning aim (at Levels 3, 4, 5 or 6 at an approved provider in England) can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

Career Training appeals to those looking for alternatives to university as they take a more practical approach to learning. You’ll focus on training for a specific career and learn your trade by actually doing the job. You’ll gain hands-on experience and have the opportunity to apply your skills immediately.
